UWI Celebrates National Honours Recipients on Jamaica’s 63rd Independence Anniversary

As Jamaica commemorates its 63rd Anniversary of Independence, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) proudly highlights the remarkable achievements of its community and strategic partners who have been recognised in the National Honours and Awards List. The prestigious appointments were announced by His Excellency Sir Patrick Linton Allen, the Governor-General, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and took effect on August 6, 2025.

Among those celebrated are individuals whose unwavering commitment and outstanding service have significantly contributed to Jamaica’s growth and development. The honourees include:

Member of the Order of Jamaica (OJ) 

  • Mr Keith Duncan, CD Businessman, UWI strategic financial partner, and AFUWI awardee for exceptional service in the fields of Finance, Business, and Social Development

Member of the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander (CD) 

  • Dr Orville Taylor, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Social Sciences, The UWI Mona, for Public Service and Advocacy in Education and Labour Relations Specialisation
  • Mr William Mahfood, Businessman and Chairman, Mona School of Business and Management for contribution to Business Development in the Manufacturing and Distribution Sector in Jamaica
  • Miss Olive Senior Writer, poet, and UWI Honorary graduate for outstanding service and contribution to the field of Literary Arts


“These individuals exemplify the highest standards of achievement and service,” said Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI. “Their recognition at the national level reflects the University’s enduring commitment to excellence, innovation, and regional development.”

The UWI extends heartfelt congratulations to all honourees and celebrates their accomplishments, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to educational and social advancement in the region.
